Mark Wahlberg plays risk taker Jim Bennett who is both an English professor and a high stakes gambler. After borrowing money from a notorious gangster, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring all while balancing his dysfunctional relationship with his mother (Jessica Lange). Bennett plays all sides, surrounding himself in the world of underground gambling and soon gets the attention of a loan shark (John Goodman) who thinks of himself as a sort of father to Bennett. Bennett then must find his own path and take the ultimate risk for a second chance.
