Kendrick chats with Devi Dev on dealing with fame
Kendrick Lamar is on a pretty significant press run, surrounding his latest video, “i,” and the first concrete details he’s given on his upcoming, yet-to-be-titled sophomore album. So far, all we know is, there’s a song called “King Kunta,” that deserves an Academy Award, according to HBO’s Scott Vener, and Kendrick would like to have it out by 2015, and Drake‘s not on it.
However, in his interview with Devi Dev, Kendrick spoke on the mind state that helped contribute to the making of “i,” and he touched on something he’s rarely spoken on.
Devi Dev: In this song, you touch on depression. Was that a real lyric, was that something that you have faced in your life before?
Kendrick Lamar: Yeah, it’s something I faced in my life not only then, but even now, you know, in these years of being in the limelight and trying to deal with it and balance, you know, your personal life with the music and what you do. There’s a lot of turmoil when you talk about money, and fame and fortune and success. A lot of things you got to handle and balance and that brings a whole lot of depression. I’ve spoken with artists that have done it before me, and they said they went through the same phases too. You know, it’s really about tapping not only my emotions, but the people around me.
You can watch the full interview above, and prepare for “King Kunta,” which hopefully hits soon.
