This week, Dave Chappelle will be one of several “Men of the Year” to grace the prestigious cover of GQ, and in a very rare interview, Chappelle touches on everything his fans and critics want to know, including getting back into film, his early, and career-defining Hip-Hop affiliations with Kanye West, Mos Def and more, and why exactly he decided to walk away from a $50 million TV deal. His decision to do so was so shocking, even today, rappers–in this instance, J. Cole–still say things like “Could I walk away from fifty mil like, Dave Chappelle” (“Runaway”).
In his interview with GQ‘s Mark Anthony-Green, Chappelle drops what’s probably one of the most legendary pieces of celebrity throwback stories you’ll ever hear.
Oh, okay. So he [Elba] used to work at Carolines. During that era of my life, there’s a high possibility that I bought reefer from Idris.
You can tell he’s an old school cat: “reefer”. Considering both Chappelle and Elba have gone on to become extremely well respected and paid entertainers, Elba will probably read that and laugh, but man. Imagine a time you could cop from Idris.
