Fresh off the ratings bonanza and highly acclaimed live production The Wiz Live!, Queen Latifah is already off to her next project.
Empire co-creator Lee Daniels has cast the former talk-show host as the lead role in his new music pilot, which will begin production in Atlanta next month. The pilot, currently untitled but referred to as Star, follows three young women who form a girl group with hopes of making it big in the music industry.
Latifah, born Dana Elaine Owens, will play Carlotta, an Atlanta beauty salon owner with amazing talent, who will become a surrogate mother to the three girls.

The roles of the aspiring singers, which prompted a nationwide star search, were snagged by up-and-comers Jude Demorest (Dallas), Ryan Destiny (Low Winter Sun) and Brittany O’Grady (The Messengers).
The untitled pilot is the first project to come from Daniels’ multi-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV.
Congratulations Queen!
