If you aren’t up to speed on the latest in science fiction type transportation to materialize in real life, then you probably have no clue who or what is Hyperloop Technologies. Hyperloop Technologies is one of the two known companies working to make super high speed transportation a reality. Two days ago, they announced that they will be testing their newest propulsion system in North Las Vegas next month.
This system allows high speed travel by utilizing extremely low air pressure within a tube to propel capsules containing people or cargo at triple-digit velocities. To make a simple example, the system is much like the tubes used at the drive thru teller at your local bank. The concept was written out in a 57-page paper presented in August 2013 by Elon Musk. He presenting it with the message that anyone with the interest could pursue his theory. Hyperloop took the idea and gave their own spin on it. Instead of just sucking a capsule up a tube with one thrust of power, the Hyperloop propulsion system moves the capsule along with a series of occasional shoves. The extra boost will come from stator coils built into track and magnets built into the capsule. The low air pressure will allow for minimal friction and the stator coils on the track will keep the capsule moving to allow for a smooth ride.
The North Las Vegas test track is a half mile long. Hyperloop predicts that the vehicle will accelerate from zero to 336 mph real quick(in about two seconds). This is at the same speed as top fuel dragsters, which are some of the fastest land vehicles on the planet.
The idea for this system is to build miles of track that span the country allowing expeditious travel of people and goods. With the success of this test run and the further development of the Hyperloop propulsion system, a world where land and air travel have little difference in travel time are not that far in our future.
