Standout running back Derrick Henry, a junior, beat out finalists Deshaun Watson–the quarterback for the #1 ranked Clemson Tigers–and Standford tailback Christian McCaffrey for the award, given annually to Division 1 college football’s most outstanding player. Henry broke the legendary Herschel Walker‘s single season SEC rushing record with 1,986 yards on 339 touches, and became just the second player in Alabama school history to take home the coveted award–Saints running back Mark Ingram being the first in 2009.
