NFL owners are meeting Tuesday (January 12) in Houston to make a final decision on the three teams that are vying to move to Los Angeles, which would be the St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders. Rams owner Stan Kroenke was hoping to build a brand new stadium of their own in Inglewood, CA while the Raiders and Chargers would like to share a new stadium in Carson, CA.
Per league sources, the Chargers have the best chance of moving to Los Angeles, but the situation surrounding a stadium remains unclear. According to the Los Angeles Times, many of the team owners would like for the Rams and Chargers to share a stadium in Inglewood, which would be a 298-acre entertainment complex that an anonymous owner has dubbed “NFL Disney World.”
One of the problem’s surrounding this proposal is that the Chargers have made it clear that they want no parts of Inglewood, and would like to to move ahead with Carson, CA project.
Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani:
Our L.A. stadium project in Carson has the most central location, the best leadership with (Disney chief executive) Bob Iger, and the ample parking and easy freeway access to give fans the best possible game day experience.
The league owners, who prefer the Inglewood plan, will apparently spend this week trying to convince the Chargers to change their mind. As far as the Raiders, it seems as though they are being left on the outside looking in on the this new move to Los Angeles, which would have them remain in Oakland for the time being. On the bright side, they do have the option of moving the team to St. Louis or San Diego, replacing the teams that leave, or share the San Francisco 49ers newly built stadium in Santa Clara, 40 minutes north of Oakland.
