Earlier this month, Troy Ave responded to some social media comments made by fellow Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ by releasing a diss track, “Bada$$,” that took aim at both Joey and his deceased friend and collaborator, Capital STEEZ, who committed suicide in 2012. Ave’s comments were perceived as out-of-line even by the cast of Sway in the Morning, the very show Troy called into to clarify his lyrics shortly after the release of the song.
Joey Bada$$–who has released music since Troy Ave’s comments but hasn’t addressed any lyrics towards him–made an appearance on Sway in the Morning today, and ripped the 5 Fingers of Death segment, during which the Pro Era frontman was asked to freestyle over five different instrumentals. It’s then that Joey took the opportunity to clap back at Troy Ave, saying that he and not Troy is the only Brooklyn rapper that’s “major without a deal” (Troy’s album title), and poking fun once again at the “Bada$$” rapper’s sales.
“He took a leap of faith and only brightened his light/You took a cheap shot of hate and only shortened your life/The difference between you and him is that he lives forever/You’ll be the first to die that nobody ever remembers/Because the city never need you ever/You committed career suicide and made New York better.”
Whew. Watch the full freestyle above.
