While the wait for a sequel to Space Jam seems to be coming to an end, with the confirmation earlier this month that LeBron James will be starring in Space Jam 2, not everyone is excited about the new film.
Yesterday [Thursday, May 12], Joe Pytka, the director of the original Space Jam, had some harsh words about the idea of a sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pytka said about the sequel:
“Don’t do it. It’s doomed. Michael Jordan was the biggest star on the planet.”
He may be referring to the fact that the NBA is now dominated by Steph Curry and his amazing play, but most fans would argue that LeBron was always the heir to the Space Jam franchise.
Other concerns about the film center around the fact that animation in a major motion picture is not as big a deal as it was back in 1996, and that the main cartoon character, Bugs Bunny, is not as relevant with today’s cartoon consumers.
But, needless to say, fans of the original movie, as well as fans of LeBron and today’s NBA, are still extremely excited to see Space Jam 2.
