Major League Baseball just announced Colorado Rockies SS Jose Reyes will be suspended through May 31. Reyes has been on paid leave since February 23, so the suspension is partially retroactive, and technically spans from then until May 31.
In a statement, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said that:
“Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Reyes violated the [Domestic Abuse] Policy and should be subject to discipline in the form of an unpaid suspension that will expire on May 31st. I am encouraged by Mr. Reyes’ commitment to the treatment provisions of the Policy in order to ensure that such an incident does not occur in the future.”
Reyes will not be appealing the suspension. Reyes previously played for the New York Mets, the Miami Marlins and the Toronto Blue Jays, before being traded to Colorado last season.
While the criminal charges against Reyes have been dropped in the incident that occurred in Hawaii last year, the MLB commissioner still has the power to suspend any player accused of domestic violence. Aroldis Chapman, the New York Yankees big splash addition in the off-season, was previously suspended 30 games to begin this season for similar reasons relating to domestic violence.
