Mari Johnson, 55 , was killed by a male inmate at a maximum security prison in Abilene, Texas around 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 16. Johnson was a correctional officer who has worked with the prison system since summer 2009.
“Correctional officers have one of the most difficult jobs in all of state government protecting the public from dangerous individuals,” Department Executive Director Brad Livingston said. “This is a tragic reminder that carrying out that mission can lead to the ultimate sacrifice.”
There hasn’t been any word on how Johnson died or the suspect yet, but the killing took place in the prison’s kitchen. The Robertson Unit holds close to 3,000 inmates and is about 140 miles west of Fort Worth, Texas. Governor Greg Abbott shared his statement on the tragedy on Twitter.
“The state of Texas mourns for Mari Johnson, a correctional officer who was senselessly murdered [Saturday morning] by an inmate at the Robertson Unit. Like all those who faithfully serve, Mari was dedicated to protecting others, and her services will not be forgotten. Cecilia [Abbott] and I ask that all Texans keep the Johnson family in their thoughts and prayers in the aftermath of this unfathomably tragic event.”
Gov. Abbott said the suspect will receive “swift justice” and that the security and safety concerns of the prison will be enhanced in order to protect the lives of those inside of the prison. This is not the first statement on a tragedy that Abbott has had to share with the public this summer. Dallas’ tragic attack on officers earlier this month led Abbott to share prayers, as well.
