Way before 50 Cent garnered success for creating and starring in Starz’s Power, he was an upcoming lyricist on Columbia Records.
While on Columbia Records, 50 dropped a pretty hot single called ‘How To Rob.’ How To Rob to shots at notables like Lil Kim, Whitney Houston, Will Smith, Heavy D, Big Pun, Kirk Franklin and even Bishop T.D. Jakes.
50’s lyrics rang like Sunday Church bells at 12 O’clock:
“The bottom line is I’m a crook with a deal. If my record don’t sell I’mma rob and steal. You better recognize, n***a, I’m straight from the street. These industry n***as is starting to look like something to eat.I’ll snatch Kim and tell Puff, ”You want to see her again? Get your ass down to the nearest ATM.”
Yup, 50 was hungry!
Sirius/XM Radio’s DJ Whoo Kid had the pleasure of breaking that record. According to Whoo Kid, he caught a lot of flack from other lyricists for doing so. “I was getting like threats, texts, you get like a phone call and then somebody hang up, like all kinds of craziness,” DJ Whoo Kid told Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson on a recent appearance on Scoop B Radio.
Added Whoo Kid:
“You gotta imagine him just giving me that record and I’m like: ‘I gotta play this? Like you serious? And I’m like alright as long as you got my back.”
The ‘How To Rob’ single was a track off of 50’s Power of the Dollar, an unreleased album.
The album never hit shelves after Columbia Records found out that 50 Cent was shot nine times. As a result, they dropped him from the label.
Dr. Dre and Eminem would discover 50 Cent and G Unit and the rest is history.
