Kendrick Lamar is already cleaning up before the show begins as he’s been awarded three Grammy’s for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best Music Video. The Compton lyricist won these pre-show Grammy’s for the single ‘HUMBLE’ which appeared as the lead single from his third studio album, ‘Damn.’
For Best Rap Performance, Lamar was up against Jay-Z’s single, 4:44, Big Sean’s ‘Bounce Back,’ Cardi B’s, Bodak Yellow, and Migos ‘Bad and Boujee,’ featuring Lil Uzi Vert.
For Best Music Video, K. Dot beat out Beck’s Up All Night, Jain’s Makeba, Jay-Z’s The Story of OJ, and Logic’s 1-800-273-8255 featuring Khalid and Alessia Cara who are both nominated for Best New Artist.
Kendrick finished the pre-show sweep with the Best Rap Song Grammy beating out Cardi B’s Bodak Yellow, Jay’Z’s The Story of OJ, Rapsody’s Sassy and Danger Mouse’s Chase me featuring Run the Jewels and Big Boi.
Kendrick still has four more nominations left tonight including Best Rap Album and Album of the Year. For Best Rap Album, Kendrick is up against Jay-Z’s 4:44, Tyler the Creator’s Flower Boy, Rapsody’s Laila’s Wisdom and Migos‘ Culture. As for Album of the Year, Kendrick faces Childish Gambino’s Awken My Love, Jay-Z’s 4:44, Bruno Mars’ 24k Magic, and Lorde’s Melodrama.
With these three wins, Kendrick now has a total 7 Grammy awards on his shelf after picking up 4 with his sophomore LP, To Pimp A Butterfly which won big with the hit single ‘Alright’ also winning for ‘These Walls.’ Kendrick scored big with Album of the Year as well for TPAB.
Album of the Year competitor, Bruno Mars, has also picked up three pre-show Grammys for Best R&B performance and Best R&B song for his single 24k Magic and picked up Best R&B album for the 24k Magic album.
