When you produce a song, it’s generally a collaborative effort. There may be someone who produces drums because they are well, the sh*t with them 808s or someone can play keys or there’s producers who just put together melodies. In addition to the songwriters, where you may have two to who knows how many pens on the record, there are normally a couple to a few producers who make the magic happen.
That’s the case when it comes to music’s most celebrated rap song, Not Like Us.
I know what you’re thinking … Musssttaaaaard! For sure. We all know DJ Mustard received the acclaim for being you know, Mustard on the beat, insert explicative, but another producer won a Grammy for his producer contributions to Not Like Us.
Enter Sean Momberger. Yes, that’s his name and he’s most certainly a co-producer who put in that work on the biggest song in the world, not called Tipsy.
So Who is Sean Momberger? Well, he’s a seasoned hitmaker to keep it a buck. Wiki makes that clear below:
Sean Momberger is best known for having been credited on Jack Harlow’s 2023 single, “Lovin on Me” which peaked the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks. Momberger co-produced Kendrick Lamar’s 2024 single “Not Like Us”. Momberger’s other credits include Chris Brown’s “Tempo” and “Hit My Line”, as well as YK Osiris’s “Worth It”, which received triple platinum certification by the RIAA. Additionally RIAA Momberger contributed keyboards to Iggy Azalea’s 2013 single “Fancy.” Momberger has also produced songs for Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, Justin Bieber, Baby Keep, Wale, A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, Kodak Black, Gunna, and Bryson Tiller, among others.
Sheesh, he’s looks like that guy when you look at his body of work.
But maybe his shine on Not Like Us seems to have been lost in the sauce for the consumer as most fans on the outside looking in just say, well, it’s a Mustard track. Makes sense, right?
When it comes down to it, Momberger is credited with being co-producer, who by some accounts is a composer, keyboardist, along with drums, and programming on sites like Music Brainz, wiki among others.
So it’s fair to say Mustard is most certainly the lead producer of Not Like Us but seems like Momberger was a big part of the production elements.
After taking home his Grammy awards for Not Like Us, Momberger was asked a few questions in the Grammy Media Room. Here’s what he said …
Momberger was asked about his story and how it felt when Kendrick Lamar brought him in on Not Like Us, knowing it’s becoming an anthem from coast to coast and worldwide:
“I’m from Florida and I moved out here about 10 years ago. and I met a rapper’s name Skeme and one of his friends ended up introduced me to DJ Musard, around five years ago. We’ve just been locked in, just making beats all day. So you know, we were we were just locked in, trying to make stuff for Kendrick and he was texting Kendrick like five beats a day and this was just a special and that hit.”
Momberger was then asked about the significance of Not Like Us as a diss record and what it means to be a part of such incredible history:
“I mean it was an extremely big moment for hip hop. I know a Childish Gambino won the award. I don’t really look at it as a diss song, I think it’s just like a unity song for LA. This was just a win for Hip Hop. Excited to be a part of it.”
As for what’s next for Momberger:
“I think if you listen to GNX, Kendrick’s last album, he showcased a lot of young LA rappers that you might not know. Like Lefty Gunplay, Peysoh, AzChike. I know Mustard is working on his next album. So we’re gonna keep it LA, we’re gonna keep it keep it out here, so it’s been good do to us so far. That’s what’s next.”
And there you have it. Sean Momberger, co-producer of Not Like Us. That part.
