Ashanti has shared an emotional tribute following the passing of Murder Inc. co-founder Irv Gotti, mourning the influential producer while acknowledging the complexities of their past relationship.
Gotti played a pivotal role in Ashanti’s career, producing some of her biggest hits and steering Murder Inc. during her rise to stardom in the early 2000s. In recent years, their relationship became strained, with Ashanti accusing him of “manipulation” and pushing back against his public remarks about their past.
“I can’t believe things ended like this… and it makes me so sad,” Ashanti wrote in her statement.
“We weren’t on the best terms the past few years, but as I’ve always said, through our ups and downs, I will forever be grateful for everything that you’ve done for me. We made history, and that will remain infinite. I’ve always respected your musical genius and your ability to push me to be my best. All the greatness and positive things we created far outweigh the dark and negative times.I have always prayed for you to find peace. Sending love and prayers to the entire family.”
In 2022, Ashanti publicly addressed her history with Gotti, disputing his claims about what he characterized as a past romance. In an interview on Angie Martinez’s IRL podcast, she clarified their connection, stating, “Let’s clear this up. We’re not gonna say relationship. We dealt with each other, but was Irv my boyfriend? Was I his girlfriend? Never… Irv had several girlfriends, so I’m a little confused by the label and the description.”
She also accused Gotti of fabricating details about their interactions, suggesting he misrepresented their bond, which nonetheless produced a string of chart-topping singles and albums during Murder Inc.’s dominance in the early 2000s.
Despite their turbulent history, Ashanti’s statement reflects a deep respect for Gotti’s contributions to her career and an acknowledgment of the lasting impact they had on Hip-Hop and R&B.
