Luka Dončić has quickly embraced his new chapter with the Los Angeles Lakers and what it means to live in America’s second-biggest city. Although understandably shocked by his trade to L.A., Dončić is already making an impact both on and off the court in his new city.
On the day of his highly anticipated Lakers debut, Dončić announced a major contribution to recovery from the devastating wildfires that recently ravaged parts of Los Angeles County. His foundation is donating $500,000 to help with the immediate recovery, including aid for the thousands of people affected by the fires and efforts to restore lost homes and community spaces.
“It’s been so sad to see and learn more about the damage from the wildfires since I landed in L.A,” Dončić wrote on social media. “I can’t believe and I feel for all the kids who lost their homes, schools, and the places where they used to play with their friends.”
He pledged more support: “Today, my foundation is donating $500,000 to immediate recovery efforts. I am also committed to helping rebuild courts, playgrounds, and fields that were destroyed, because every kid needs a safe place to play. To everyone affected by these fires: we’re here to help, now and for the long haul.”
Despite not living in Los Angeles when the fires started, Dončić has wasted no time showing his commitment to the city’s recovery. His generous donation is already making a difference as L.A. works to rebuild the many communities impacted.
Among those personally affected by the fires was Dončić’s new coach, JJ Redick, who lost his home in the Palisades. Redick’s children, Knox and Kai, also lost their prized jersey collections in the blaze. In a heartwarming display of solidarity, NBA players such as Chris Paul, Victor Wembanyama, and Stephen Curry all gifted jerseys to Knox and Kai, helping to restore a small piece of what they lost.
