SOURCE SPORTS: Boston Celtics Sell For A Record-Breaking $6.1 Billion

The Boston Celtics have officially sold for a staggering $6.1 billion, setting a new record for the most expensive sports franchise sale in North American history.

Bill Chisholm, managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, submitted the winning bid for the 18-time NBA champions, surpassing the previous record set in 2023 when Josh Harris purchased the Washington Commanders for $6.05 billion.

The Celtics were put on the market shortly after capturing the 2024 NBA championship with a Finals victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Their longtime owner, Wyc Grousbeck, announced his decision to sell for “estate and family planning considerations.” Initially, Grousbeck planned to offload 51% of the team by late 2024 or early 2025, with the remaining stake transferring by 2028.

Despite the sale, Grousbeck is expected to remain the team’s governor until 2028, ensuring continuity in leadership as the franchise transitions to new ownership.

Chisholm, a Dartmouth graduate and lifelong Celtics fan, grew up just 40 minutes outside Boston. Now, he takes the reins of one of the NBA’s most storied franchises, ushering in a new era for the Celtics.
