Dawn Robinson has had enough. She’s clearing up mass confusion surrounding her living situation after her recent YouTube video went viral. The R&B singer, known for her work with En Vogue and Lucy Pearl, shared with fans that she has lived in her car for the past few years. However, in a statement issued to People on March 21, Robinson clarified that she is not without a home.
“I am not homeless. I am temporarily choosing car life as part of my journey of healing and self-discovery,” Robinson explained, addressing the widespread assumptions.
Since sharing her story, Robinson has been moved by the outpouring of support from her fans and reassured them, saying, “I’m overwhelmed by the love I’ve received. Don’t worry about me.”

Reflecting on her unique experience, the star expressed how her decision to embrace car life was a personal and transformative choice. “I took a risk and jumped headfirst into this lifestyle, and WOW, what a crazy, fun, sometimes scary ride it’s been,” she shared. “For me, failure is NOT an option. Being vulnerable sucks, but here I GROW. This is about embracing freedom, trusting the process, and finding strength in the unexpected.”
Get this: She delved deeper into the idea of life pushing her outside of her comfort zone: “Sometimes in life, we end up in situations that we weren’t expecting. There’s something we need to learn or teach, but we’re too afraid to push ourselves out of our comfort zones to do it—so the universe does it for us! During this growth period, we either learn to trust ourselves or give in to fear and fail.”
Moreover, the singer issued an important warning to fans who may have encountered fundraising pages claiming to be in her name. “I’ve been made aware that some individuals may be requesting funds on my behalf through platforms like Cash App, GoFundMe or other means,” Robinson stated. “I want to be clear: I have not authorized any fundraising campaigns, and I do not want anyone — especially my loyal fans — to be scammed or taken advantage of.”
ICYMI, Robinson, who decided to live in her car on March 9, 2022, shared the personal and professional reasons behind her choice in a heartfelt 18-minute YouTube video. She opened up about family conflicts and the challenges she faced with her former manager, which influenced her decision. Despite the difficulties, she found comfort in her unconventional lifestyle, sharing, “I felt free. I felt like I was on a camping trip. It just felt like it was the right thing to do.”
The “Hold On” artist also noted that she wasn’t alone in this experience, mentioning that other notable figures, like Marvin Gaye, have also lived in their cars at pivotal moments.
