Starz to Release ‘Magic City: An American Fantasy’ Docuseries, Exploring Iconic Gentlemens Club’s Legacy

Mark your calendars. Starz has announced the acquisition of Magic City: An American Fantasy, a five-part docuseries set to premiere this summer. The series delves into the captivating history of Atlanta’s legendary strip club, Magic City, and its profound impact on hip-hop culture. Executive producers for the project include Jermaine Dupri, Jami Gertz, and Bayan Joonam.

If unfamiliar, since its opening in 1985, Magic City has become an iconic Atlanta landmark, often referred to as the “Black Studio 54.” The club has played a pivotal role in launching the careers of numerous artists, earning its reputation as a cultural powerhouse. According to a press release, Magic City: An American Fantasy will chronicle “the full tale of the storied club’s rise to global prominence and how it became the definitive king-maker in the hip-hop community.”

Get this: Magic City was founded by Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney. Over the years, the club has attracted a star-studded clientele, including 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike, Big Boi, and many others. The series will also highlight the contributions of dancers and behind-the-scenes figures who helped cement Magic City’s legendary status.

Beyond its influence on music, Magic City has served as a cultural hub in Atlanta. During their peak, it was a frequent hangout for the B.M.F. crew and even hosted Stacey Abrams’ 2020 get-out-the-vote announcement. The club’s significance extends far beyond its walls, making it a symbol of Atlanta’s vibrant culture.

Moreover, creator and executive producer Cole Brown emphasized the importance of sharing the club’s story. “From politicians to artists, to drug kingpins, Magic City has been a home for a broad cross-section of Black Atlanta for decades,” Brown said. “Everyone should know the unbelievable story of this institution and the man who founded it, and STARZ is the perfect partner to bring it to the world. We’re thrilled.”

Interestingly and maybe surprisingly, Jami Gertz, a veteran actress who is another executive producer, reflected on her connection to the Barney family and the city of Atlanta. “When our family became the Majority Owners of The Atlanta Hawks, the Barneys were the very first people to welcome us to the city,” Gertz shared. “They reached out to us with open arms and that great southern hospitality, not to mention the fact that Juju Barney and my sons became fast friends. I am honored to be a part of bringing their family’s story to the world. It’s a tale of tremendous heart and hustle! And a true love letter to our adopted home of Atlanta, Georgia!”

The docuseries promises to offer an in-depth look at Magic City’s rise to fame, its cultural significance, and the enduring legacy of its founder. With its blend of music, history, and Atlanta’s unique charm, Magic City: An American Fantasy is poised to captivate audiences when it premieres on Starz this summer.
