Interview with Alphonso Heyward: Actor, Director, and the Future of Indie Film

Alphonso Heyward is quickly becoming a name to know. Hailing from Far Rockaway, Queens, he’s not only making noise as an actor and comedian, but also as a director, entrepreneur, and brand ambassador. With roles like West in The 4.4 Series, collaborations with viral star Kountry Wayne, and his own production company, Machine Kings Entertainment, Alphonso is walking proof that hustle and heart go a long way. We sat down with him to talk life, legacy, and leveling up.

Q: Let’s start from the beginning. What was growing up in Far Rockaway like for you?

Far Rock is real. Growing up there teaches you how to navigate pressure early. Nothing is sugar-coated, and that gave me a thick skin and a strong work ethic. It also taught me how to adapt—which helped me when I started acting. You see so much at a young age, and you either fold or rise—I chose to rise. The stories and energy of Far Rock live in everything I do creatively.

Q: When did acting and comedy enter the picture for you?

It started with background work—small roles, quick appearances. I just wanted to be close to the energy of the industry. I started doing YouTube skits, web series, and even got the chance to collaborate with creators like Kountry Wayne. I loved the challenge of getting laughs and reactions from strangers. But once I saw the impact storytelling could have, I knew I wanted more than just laughs—I wanted to move people too.

Q: Now you’re directing and producing through your own company. Tell us about Machine Kings Entertainment.

Machine Kings Entertainment is my baby. It’s my creative house—where I can develop original content that speaks to our culture without being filtered. It’s a space for real stories and raw talent. I built it to give myself and others the opportunities we weren’t being handed. I want Machine Kings to represent ownership, originality, and the power of vision in motion.

Q: You’re also in The 4.4 Series. What’s that experience been like?

Playing West has been one of the most fulfilling roles I’ve had. It allowed me to show depth, not just be “the funny guy.” The series is gritty, emotional, and rooted in real issues that people can relate to. Every scene forced me to dig deeper as a performer, and that’s what I live for. The cast and crew felt like family—we’re telling something real.

Q: You’re also active outside of film. Talk to us about your business side.

I’m a brand ambassador for GGL—Gangsta Gone Legit. That brand speaks directly to my story. It’s about transition, about turning your past into power. I’m also working with Dragon Fire Wines, which is something completely different, but it adds to the lifestyle brand I’m building. I want to show people you can be multi-dimensional—creative, business-minded, and still stay true to your roots.

Q: What’s been the biggest lesson so far on your journey?

Consistency beats hype. I’ve seen people go viral and fade out because they didn’t have substance behind the flash. I’m playing the long game. Every role, every deal, every piece of content—I’m building a legacy, not chasing a moment. When it’s authentic, it lasts—and I’m here to last.

Q: What can we expect from you next?

More films, more original content under Machine Kings, more collabs, and more business ventures. I’m leveling up across the board. I’m also tapping into mentoring and helping younger creatives navigate this space. I want to leave a blueprint for others who come from where I come from. This next chapter is all about impact.

Q: Final words to young people watching your rise?

Don’t wait. Don’t ask for permission. Bet on yourself, build your own table, and bring people with you when you eat. This industry will test you—but if you stay real and stay moving, you’ll find your lane. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being persistent and unapologetically you.
