The confusion over which Chicago team the Holy Father roots for has finally been put to rest. Pope Leo XIV is a devoted White Sox fan, and now, the South Side team is returning the love.
Ahead of their game against the Seattle Mariners, the White Sox unveiled a new mural at Guaranteed Rate Field celebrating their most divine supporter. The vibrant display features the 69-year-old Pontiff waving with the Chicago skyline in the background, alongside a photo of him cheering during the team’s 2005 World Series run.
The Pope’s Sox fandom went public shortly after his election, when photos surfaced of him repping the team in whole spirit—at one point even captured mid-phone call, perhaps dialing for divine intervention during a tight inning.
While the Sox were making their tribute back home, Pope Leo XIV was in Vatican City meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha. The couple brought a piece of Chicago, gifting the Pope a custom Chicago Bears jersey to round out his Windy City sports collection.
