SOURCE SPORTS: Reds’ Will Benson Named NL Player Of The Week

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Will Benson has been named the National League Player of the Week following a remarkable stretch at the plate. In six games against the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians, Benson posted a .526 batting average (10-for-19), launched five home runs, and drove in 10 runs, culminating in an impressive 1.959 OPS.

Benson’s power surge included home runs in four consecutive games from May 15 to May 18, significantly contributing to the Reds’ offensive success during that period. His performance not only led the majors in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS, home runs, and total bases but also tied for the major league lead in RBIs and extra-base hits for the week. This accolade marks Benson’s first career Player of the Week award and the first for a Reds player since Rece Hinds received the honor in July 2024. Benson’s recent success has been a bright spot for the Reds, who are striving to climb the standings in the National League Central division.

Benson began the season with Triple-A Louisville but was recalled to the majors in early May. Since his return, he has made a significant impact, showcasing the potential that the Reds saw when they acquired him from the Cleveland Guardians in 2023.

As the Reds continue their season, Benson’s continued performance will be crucial to the team’s success. His recent achievements have not only earned him individual recognition but have also energized the team’s lineup as they pursue a playoff berth.
