On this day in 1990, Trenton, New Jersey’s own Poor Righteous Teachers released their landmark debut album Holy Intellect through Profile/Arista Records. The trio—Wise Intelligent, Culture Freedom, and the late Father Shaheed—delivered a culturally rich and lyrically sharp body of work that brought the teachings of the Nation of Gods and Earths (5% Nation) to the forefront of Hip-Hop. At a time when conscious rap was thriving, Holy Intellect stood out with its unique blend of Five Percenter wisdom, reggae-influenced cadences, and razor-sharp East Coast production.
Produced largely by Tony Dofat, the 12-track album struck a balance between hard-hitting knowledge and crowd-moving energy. The breakout single “Rock Dis Funky Joint” became a certified underground classic, climbing to Number 4 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart and helping the group gain national attention. Other standouts included the heartfelt “Shakiyla,” a love song paying homage to the strength and beauty of Black women, and the title track, which showcased Wise Intelligent’s high-level lyrical dexterity. Holy Intellect not only carved out a unique voice in a crowded era but was later honored in The Source magazine’s 100 Best Rap Albums list, forever cementing its place in Hip-Hop history.
