Brandy And Monica Claim That “The Boys Is Mine” Was Inspired By Jerry Springer

In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, R&B icons Brandy and Monica shared an unexpected origin story behind their chart-topping 1998 duet, The Boy Is Mine. As they gear up for their long-awaited reunion tour, the duo revealed that the idea for their biggest hit actually came from watching daytime TV drama.

“I used to be a huge fan of The Jerry Springer Show,” Brandy recalled. “One of the episodes was titled ‘The Boy Is Mine,’ and I thought, ‘Oh my God. That’s a song idea. Let’s run with it.’”

Monica chimed in to confirm that not only was the inspiration real, but so is the prospect of new music. “We’ll start working on music right away,” she said. “That way we can be performing it while we’re on tour. But there’s no studio on the tour bus — we’ll leave that to the rappers.”

Fittingly, the music video for The Boy Is Mine opens with a playful nod to its trash TV roots, showing Brandy tuning in to an episode of The Jerry Springer Show, a subtle wink to where it all began.

As the duo prepares to bring their voices back together on stage, fans can look forward to new material born from the same creative spark that turned a daytime TV moment into an R&B classic.
