Nelly and Ashanti, who welcomed their first child together, Kareem Kenkaide Haynes (affectionately known as KK), in July 2024, have been candid about their differing approaches to parenting, with Nelly humorously asserting his retirement from diaper-changing duties.
In a March 2025 interview with Access Hollywood, the rapper playfully stated that when it comes to changing KK’s diapers, he “ain’t got nothing for him.” He further elaborated that he views his role in that specific aspect of parenting as “pretty much over,” deferring to Ashanti’s capabilities as a mother.
Ashanti, for her part, has embraced her role as a new mom with fervent dedication. Described as “very mama bear-ish,” she is meticulous about KK’s well-being, ensuring everything from his sheets to his food-grade silicone items are organic and sanitized. As this is her first child, she admits to being “very, very protective” of their now 11-month-old son.
Nelly, who is also a father to four older children, acknowledged his more relaxed parenting style, attributing it to his prior experience. He expressed a belief that children learn a great deal on their own. Despite their distinct approaches, Nelly wholeheartedly praised Ashanti, stating, “She’s a great mom… I wish all mothers could see the way that she gets down a little bit. You wish every kid had that type of love.” The couple’s playful dynamic and insights into their new family life are also set to be featured in their new reality series, “Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together.”
