Today In Hip Hop History: The Roots’ Founding Member Malik B. Passed Away Five Years Ago

On this date in 2020, Hip Hop lost one of its most underappreciated voices—Malik Abdul-Basit Smart, better known as Malik B, a founding member of The Roots. He was 47 years old.

At the time of his passing, The Roots released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of their longtime brother-in-rhyme:

“It is with heavy hearts and tearful eyes that we regretfully inform you of the passing of our beloved brother and longtime Roots member Malik Abdul Baset. May he be remembered for his devotion to Islam, his loving brotherhood, and his innovation as one of the most gifted MCs of all time. We ask that you please respect his family and extended family in our time of mourning such a great loss.”

Malik B was a cornerstone of The Roots’ early sound, helping to shape the live-band aesthetic that became their signature. He appeared on the group’s first four albums, including Organix, Do You Want More?!!!??!, Illadelph Halflife, and Things Fall Apart, cementing his reputation as a fierce lyricist and streetwise wordsmith.

Though internal differences led to his departure from the group, Malik never drifted far from the music. He made notable guest appearances on later Roots projects and went on to release a solo album, Street Assault, in 2005; a raw, gritty offering that stayed true to his underground roots.

To this day, the exact cause of his death remains unknown. What’s certain, however, is Malik B’s impact on Hip Hop and his irreplaceable contributions to one of the culture’s most respected collectives. His voice, style, and spirit live on through the music.

Rest in power, Malik B.
