Montell Jordan, the voice behind the 1995 classic “This Is How We Do It,” revealed heartbreaking news during a sit down with the Today show on September 3. The singer shared that his battle with prostate cancer is not over, announcing that the disease has returned and spread to his lymph nodes.
Get checked out, everyone. Your internal health is just as vital as your mental health.
Jordan was first diagnosed in 2024 and underwent a radical prostatectomy to remove his prostate. At the time, doctors believed he was clear of cancer. “I always imagined I would be telling my prostate cancer story from the other side of prostate cancer because I had a radical prostatectomy surgery,” Jordan told Today. “My prostate was removed. There were clear margins.”
However, the relief did not last long. “Close to a year post-prostatectomy, I still need to go back and have additional treatments because it’s [been] detected that there is still cancer,” he explained. To fight it, Jordan will begin a targeted radiation program aimed at his lymph nodes and will also take home blockers designed to stop the cancer from growing. “It is a seven-and-a-half week interruption of life to make sure that I have a longer life,” he added.
Jordan also revealed he is planning to chronicle this journey through a documentary in partnership with the nonprofit Zero Prostate Cancer. The project, expected next year, is meant to provide support and guidance for others facing similar challenges. “I’m trying to give a template for people that get diagnosed with this to … know they have options available to them,” Jordan said. “It’s okay to cry…It’s okay to shake your fist at God…It’s okay to navigate and do what you need to do, but doing nothing is not an option. I never knew there was such a thing as being a two-time cancer survivor, so that’s the journey that I’m on right now.”
