The beloved comedy writer’s brother apparently has some skeletons in his closet.
A representative from The Mindy Project cleared the air and said that “Mindy has been estranged from her brother for years. She was not aware of his decision to apply to medical school under a different name and race.” For those of you unfamiliar with how far this hoax goes, brace yourselves. Chokal-Ingam, Mindy Kaling’s older brother, runs a site called “almostblack.com” and is supposedly working towards a memoir titled “Almost Black: The True Story Of An Indian American Who Got Into Medical School Posing As An African American.” The memoir is about what Chokal-Ingam calls “a takedown of the system that will shine a light on the type of racial favoritism I experienced, a form of ‘affirmative action discrimination.” His transformation included shaving his head, trimming his eyelashes, going by his middle name Jojo and joining the Organization of Black Students. When it was all said and done he interviewed at several Ivy Leagues and was accepted at the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1999. After dropping out of medical school, he later went on to receive an MBA from UCLA. On Chokal-Ingam’s twitter he refers to himself as Mindy’s “brother/nemesis” and Mindy has so far remained silent about recent events.
