This past weekend, 18-year pro quarterback Peyton Manning announced his retirement from football, effective immediately. The news came just a month after Peyton’s Broncos won Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers, making Manning the only starting quarterback in NFL history to win a Super Bowl with two different teams.
His retirement however, left the Broncos in a bit of a precarious position, considering Manning’s back-up was Brock Osweiler, a promising but unproven 3-year pro. Things were further complicated this week when Osweiler accepted a 4-year, $72 million offer from the Houston Texans, who themselves have looked desperately for a consistent signal-caller since the departure of Matt Schaub in 2013. The Broncos third-string quarterback? A guy named Trevor Siemian, a rookie who didn’t throw a pass in a game all season.
So, today, John Elway went and got his team a quarterback: Mark Sanchez. Yes, the Broncos have made a trade with the Eagles for Mark Sanchez. To be fair, after an unfortunate route out of New York despite leading the team to two consecutive AFC Championships, Sanchez was effective in Philadelphia, throwing for 2,420 yards and 14 touchdowns with a 64% completion rate in 8 starts in 2014. In exchange, the Eagles will be receiving a conditional draft pick; the trade was initially reported by Denver’s 9News.
