San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick seemed to be poised to bring the franchise to another era of dominance after leading them to the Super Bowl a few years ago. Immediately afterward, the QB signed a six year contract extension with the team and it was all downhill from there. Aside from failure to match his initial success, Kaepernick was also hampered by injuries, which led to the team placing him on Injured Reserve in November 2015.
Since then, the rumblings of Kaepernick wanting to leave San Francisco begun to arise. The rumors grew louder when the team hired new head coach Chip Kelly. His agents even contacted the franchise and asked for permission to seek a trade. What makes matters all the more complicated is that if Kaepernick is not released by the team before April 1, they will be on the hook for $11.9 million of his salary. According Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea, the 49ers plan on moving forward Kaepernick, whether he wants to be there or not. Even adding that coach Kelly is looking forward to working with him.
Last week, ESPN reported that Kaepernick had expressed interest in playing for either the Cleveland Browns or Oakland Raiders but when the 49ers were in trade talks with the Browns, New York Jets and Denver Broncos, neither team showed much urgency to acquire the QB. As of now, the franchise will move forward with him for the 2016 season and hope that a team in desperate need of a quarterback will eventually reach out.
