On Wednesday, nominations for the 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced. The Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards for short) are accolades given by the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) in recognition of outstanding performances in film and prime time television. The statue of the award is of a nude male figure holding both a mask of comedy and a mask of tragedy, is called “The Actor.”
The nominees were announced by actress Laverne Cox and comedian Awkwafina live from the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, Calif. SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris introduced the presenters, who revealed nominations for acting in television and film.
In the film category, A Star Is Born leads with four nods, including best actor for Bradley Cooper and best actress for Lady Gaga. Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and The Favourite came in second place in terms of nominations, both receiving 3 noms apiece. The box office smash Black Panther received a nomination for Best Picture.
John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) and Mahershala Ali (Green Book) are up for the Lead Actor and Supporting Actor.
SAG Award winner Sterling K. Brown is up again for the Male Actor in a Drama Series award once again for This Is Us.
There were some major snubs of Black women that sent social media ablaze. In fact, no Black women made the cut for Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress. Viola Davis (Widows), Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk), and Regina Hall (Support The Girls) who all gave powerful performances were all overlooked.
The Screens Actors Guild is usually pretty good about diverse representation at their awards show, but they dropped the ball this year.
The award show will broadcast on January 27th, 2019.
