Tom Cruise takes the lead in the visually captivating sci-fi film Oblivion directed by Tron Legacy’s Joseph Kosinski. Kosinski stated “Oblivion pays homage to science fiction films of the 1970s,” and it definitely accomplishes that. Alongside Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, Zoe Bell and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau all star in the film.

Oblivion is set in 2077 and follows Jack Harper (Cruise), a veteran tech assigned to extract the planet’s remaining resources after the fallout of an alien invasion that left Earth uninhabitable. Alongside his communications officer Victoria (Riseborough), the two must defend the scarce resources by warding off remaining Scavs that seek to prevent the process. Morgan Freeman stars as a resistance leader stationed on Earth.

Oblivion where it lacks in story undoubtedly picks up in astonishing visuals that coast the audience through its two hour runtime. Tom Cruise maintains a strong film record following up his action flick Jack Reacher with the sci-fi thriller. The problem with Oblivion is that it lacks a true story to be analyzed and explored and without striking scenes that allows audiences to lose themselves in the movie, it would undoubtedly fall flat. Cruise’s performance and strong and co-star Olga (Quantum of Solace) has been building up to an impressive career.

Oblivion is now playing.
