Justice is served. Corey Walker, the man convicted in the tragic killing of rapper Pop Smoke, has been sentenced to 29 years in prison. According to Rolling Stone, Walker, now 24, pleaded guilty to home invasion robbery with a firearm, gang enhancement, and voluntary manslaughter in connection with the fatal incident.
In a tearful statement during his sentencing on February 21, Walker expressed deep regret for his actions, apologizing to Pop Smoke’s family despite their absence in the courtroom. “Even though the Jackson family isn’t here in court today, I would like to sincerely apologize for my unforgivable actions, although there’s no apology that amounts to the taking of someone’s life,” Walker said.
He continued offering his so-called apology to his family and community, acknowledging the pain and embarrassment caused by his involvement in the crime. “I would also like to take this opportunity to apologize to my family for the pain and embarrassment that they have endured over the last five years, as well as an apology to my community.”
In his remarks, Walker took full responsibility for his participation in the crime, adding, “Today I take responsibility for my dreadful partake in these crimes, and as I begin my road to rehabilitation, I assure you that I will steer clear from negative behavior.”
Earlier this month, Walker reached a plea deal, providing details on the events that led to the rapper’s murder. He explained that he, along with three other men—aged 15, 16, and 17 at the time—ambushed Pop Smoke while he was in the shower at an Airbnb. Walker, the oldest of the group, said he wasn’t the shooter and had instructed his accomplices to avoid using firearms, instead telling them to use a “flower vase” as a weapon.
It wasn’t until after the robbers had left the house and entered their vehicle that Walker learned of the fatal shooting. According to court documents, he responded by assaulting the shooter in an attempt to stop the violence.
With Walker’s sentencing, the lengthy legal process surrounding the tragic death of Pop Smoke has come to a close. The loss of the rising rap star, born Bashar Barakah Jackson, has left a significant void in the music world, and the sentencing marks a painful chapter in the pursuit of justice for his family and fans.
