Today in Hip-Hop History: Cult Classic Flick ‘CB4’ Opened In Theaters 32 Years Ago

On this day 32 years ago, Chris Rock, Allen Payne, and Charlie Murphy gave us a hilarious take on gangsta rap with the cult-classic comedy CB4.

Released in 1993, CB4 satirized the world of gangsta rap, drawing heavy inspiration from N.W.A. and featuring Hip-Hop legends like Ice-T, Ice Cube, Flavor Flav, and the late Eazy-E.

Charlie Murphy played “Gusto,” a certified gangster “three generations deep in gangsterdom.” Meanwhile, Rock’s character, Albert Brown, an aspiring rapper from “LoCash,” jacks Gusto’s identity while he’s in prison, rebranding himself as MC Gusto and forming the group CB4—named after Cell Block 4. Their music takes the rap world by storm, but things take a turn when the real Gusto gets out of jail.

Salute to Chris Rock, Charlie Murphy (RIP), Allen Payne, and Daddy-O of Stetsasonic, who provided the vocals for CB4’s infamous hits “Straight Outta LoCash” and “Sweat From My Balls.” CB4 remains a comedic gem and a timeless piece of Hip-Hop history!
