Regé-Jean Page to Star and Produce Bold New Adaptation of Classic Novel ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’

Fresh off his breakout role in Bridgerton, Regé-Jean Page is diving back into the world of period dramas with a fresh take on Alexandre Dumas’ classic tale, The Count of Monte Cristo.

According to Deadline, Page will not only star in the film but also produce it through his company, A Mighty Stranger, alongside his producing partner, Emily Brown. The project is being developed by independent studio Department M, with founders Mike LaRocca and Michael Schaefer, as well as YouRoc founder Youtchi von Lintel, serving as executive producers.

Originally published in 1846, The Count of Monte Cristo tells the story of Edmond Dantès, a young sailor who is wrongfully imprisoned due to the jealousy of those around him. After years of plotting his escape, Dantès emerges as the enigmatic Count, using his newfound wealth to exact revenge on those who betrayed him.

In a statement about the project, Page expressed his enthusiasm for bringing this timeless story to life.

“Bold, adventurous storytelling with heart is the reason I got into this business, and is the backbone of everything we’re making,” he said.

“Working alongside incredible collaborators, A Mighty Stranger is building a slate of creative-led projects that will broaden the cultural lens through pure entertainment,” he continued. “That’s why we’re so excited to be bringing The Count of Monte Cristo to global audiences, unlocking the depths of Dumas’ work in ways not seen yet.”

This adaptation marks a historic moment, as it will be the first time a Black actor portrays the Count. The casting choice is particularly fitting given Dumas’ own mixed-race heritage. The acclaimed author’s father, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, was of Haitian descent and made history as the first person of color to achieve the rank of general in France. Some scholars believe the character of the Count was inspired by Thomas-Alexandre’s remarkable life.

While the casting may spark debate among some, it serves as a powerful reminder of the significant contributions made by Black and mixed-race individuals throughout European history. A film about Thomas-Alexandre Dumas has long been in development, though he was briefly depicted in the 2023 film Napoleon.

With Regé-Jean Page at the helm, this new adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo promises to breathe fresh life into Dumas’ iconic tale, offering audiences a bold and culturally resonant interpretation of the classic story.
