The NCAA men’s basketball tournament has been red hot and continues Friday with four compelling Sweet 16 matchups that will determine half of this year’s Elite Eight field. The evening’s games feature conference rivals, top seeds, and contrasting styles that promise exciting basketball.
No. 2 Tennessee vs. No. 3 Kentucky (7:39 p.m. ET, TBS/TRUTV)
This SEC showdown marks the third meeting between these teams this season, with Kentucky having won both previous contests. The Wildcats successfully contained Tennessee’s leading scorer Chaz Lanier in those games, but the Volunteers’ guard enters this matchup on a hot streak. Kentucky’s improved shooting and the return of guard Lamont Butler could test Tennessee’s typically strong perimeter defense.
No. 1 Auburn vs. No. 5 Michigan (9:39 p.m. ET, CBS)
Auburn looks to regain its dominant early-season form against Big Ten tournament champion Michigan. The Tigers face a challenge from Michigan’s imposing frontcourt duo of Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf, potentially testing Auburn’s Johni Broome. However, Auburn’s perimeter shooting from Tahaad Pettiford and Chad Baker-Mazara, combined with their disruptive defense, could prove decisive. Michigan point guard Tre Donaldson brings extra motivation facing his former team.
No. 1 Houston vs. No. 4 Purdue (10:09 p.m. ET, TBS/truTV)
The nightcap features a battle of contrasting styles as Houston’s nation-leading defense (58.4 ppg allowed) takes on Purdue’s efficient offense. While Purdue will enjoy home-state support in Indianapolis, Houston brings confidence from a perfect 10-0 road record in Big 12 play. The Cougars’ backcourt of L.J. Cryer and Emanuel Sharp will challenge Purdue’s playmakers Braden Smith, Trey Kaufman-Renn and Fletcher Loyer.
Friday’s winners advance to Sunday’s regional finals, moving one step closer to the Final Four in San Antonio. Let us know who you’re excited for in the comments.
