Michael Jay’s “Addict” Is a Painfully Honest Anthem for Recovery and Self-Belief

There’s a weight to the word addiction—one that too often gets lost in judgment or headlines. But for rapper Michael Jay, the word carries real names, real pain, and a purpose that echoes through every bar he delivers. His latest release, “Addict,” isn’t just a song. It’s a window into a life marked by struggle, survival, and the determination to turn trauma into testimony.

“I wrote it in the memory of my friend that I lost to fentanyl,” Michael shares. “I also wrote it for all those out there still struggling in active addiction”. The music video is raw, the lyrics are deeply personal, and the performance isn’t for show—it’s lived experience. He doesn’t glamorize the pain, nor does he hide from it. He confronts it head-on, showing how recovery, though never perfect, can become a superpower.

Michael’s creative process is as unfiltered as his message. He sits down, presses play on a beat, and lets the emotion do the writing. “Verses come first,” he says, “they’re like journal entries in real time.” Over the past decade, he’s sharpened his pen with influences like Eminem, Nas, Hopsin, and J. Cole—artists known for their truth-telling. But what sets Michael apart is his refusal to fit any mold. “I don’t look like your typical rapper,” he admits. “But the second people hear me spit in real time, there’s an immediate change in how they think. Never judge a book by its cover.”

At the heart of it all, Michael Jay makes music because he has to — not for validation, but for survival and growth. “I need to create music to be the best version of myself. It inspires me to keep growing. Even if no one heard my music I would still continue making it.” He’s driven by the underdog spirit, by authenticity, and by the belief that hard work outshines popularity. With a steady rollout of monthly releases, meaningful collaborations on the way, and a growing community behind him, Michael isn’t just sharing songs—he’s sharing lifelines.

Navigating through the industry (music) hasn’t always been easy, especially when you do not fit the typical mold. But quite honestly those moments of being underestimated have only fueled Michael’s determination and overall hunger. That drive has led to major milestones- like opening for Tech N9ne, headlining his own packed shows, and releasing powerful visuals such as “Fall Down” and “Let It Play.”

Michael Jay isn’t chasing clout, he’s carving his own lane. And if Addict is any sign of what’s to come, his next 18 months of releases might just be what someone out there needs to keep going.
