Over the weekend, in Johannesburg, South Africa, The Global Citizens Festival was held. The theme of this year’s festival was to honor the life, work and legacy of freedom fighter Nelson Mandela on his 100th birthday.
According to the website, The Global Citizen Awards seeks,
“to build a movement of 100M action-taking Global Citizens to help achieve our vision of ending extreme poverty by 2030.Global Citizen is a movement of engaged citizens who are using their collective voice to end extreme poverty by 2030. On our platform, Global Citizens learn about the systemic causes of extreme poverty, take action on those issues, and earn rewards for their actions — as part of a global community committed to lasting change. o date, the actions by our global community along with our high level advocacy efforts and with our partners, have resulted commitments and policy announcements from leaders, valued at over $37 billion that is set to affect the lives of more than 2.25 billion people by 2030. A total of 650 million people’s lives have already been impacted.”
The concert lineup consisted of Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Usher, Pharrell Williams and many more playing their biggest hits to a worldwide audience. Also in attendance was Oprah Winfrey, Dave Chappelle, Gayle King, Ava DuVernay, Tyler Perry and others.
