One of the greatest things about Hip-Hop has always been being able to watch artists grind with diligence and determination with hopes of being offered a record deal and/or an opportunity to build their career. Over the past 25 years, The Source’s Unsigned Hype column has a rich history of shining a light on that particular facet of Hip-Hop culture, and with the Unsigned Hype competition, we plan on continuing that tradition.
Before “Juicy” and “Big Poppa”, The Notorious B.I.G. was featured in the Unsigned Hype column. In March of 1998, Eminem was featured in the Unsigned Hype column. The next year, he released The Slim Shady LP, which has sold over 5 million copies. Common, Mobb Deep (before they were known as Mobb Deep), DMX, Macklemore, and many more of the culture’s biggest artists got their start in The Source’s Unsigned Hype column.
In fact, before the digital proliferation of music and content, and long before American Idol, The Source, via Unsigned Hype, was the best way to discover new and innovative Hip-Hop talent. Now, the new Unsigned Hype is back!
With the Unsigned Hype Competition and the SOURCE360, we plan to showcase the talents of hundreds of unsigned artists who covet a platform to get their talents to the masses. How do you become a part of it? It’s pretty simple.
1. Create your SOURCE360 Unsigned Hype account at uh.thesource360.com
2. Carefully read over the “Rules” page, which you can access directly by clicking here.
3. Upload a video to your Unsigned Hype account of you spitting your best bars, and make sure you tweet the link to your submission with the hashtags “#UNSIGNEDHYPE #SOURCE360 #ITSMYTURN”. We will stop accepting submissions at 11:59:59 pm on the night of August 31st.
We will then select 25 contestants–10 will be chosen by The Source’s staff, 15 will be chosen by the viewers–to compete in Round 2 in Brooklyn, NY in front of industry power-players and an eager crowd on September 19 at SOURCE360. The final 8 will move on to the semi-finals and perform again the night of Sept. 19 for our judges at a showcase that will feature headlining performances from former Unsigned Hype members. The 2014 Unsigned Hype Finals will be held at The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY at the SOURCE360 Concert where the crowd will choose between two finalists. The winner will perform an original song in front of thousands of people at the SOURCE360 Concert with the legendary acts performing that night.
Are you ready? We will see…
