Don’t be alarmed, but the number of followers you have on Instagram is about to decrease, and it’s not because your selfies are ugly, or your latest fashion isn’t hip enough.  Instagram is about to do some serious spring cleaning.

The social media giant announced that they now have over 300 million users.  But Instagram is keeping it real with us; they know tons of those accounts are fake, spammy accounts that are cluttering the app.  And now, they are getting aggressive about eliminating those users.

“We’ve been deactivating spammy accounts from Instagram on an ongoing basis to improve your experience.  As part of this effort, we will be deleting these accounts forever, so they will no longer be included in follower counts. This means that some of you will see a change in your follower count.

Most of you won’t see any impact. If you’re one of those who will see a correction, you will receive a notification in the app directing you to additional information.”

This isn’t the first time Instagram has tried to destroy spam accounts; in April 2014 they decided to start a war against the fake accounts. With today’s announcement, Instagram plans on dragging out this war as long as possible.
