Yesterday, authorities in Nodaway County of the small, rural town of Elmo, Missouri began their quest to figure out how a 5-year old boy shot and killed his younger brother, who was just 9 months old. According to Nodaway County Sheriff Darren White, the boys’ mother frantically called 911, alerting operators that her 5-year old son shot her 9 month old son shot “with a paintball gun,” which was later determined to be a real gun by authorities. Specifically, a .22 caliber magnum revolver.

The 9-month old was laying in his crib when his gun-toting brother approached him and shot him, which authorities are claiming was an accidental occurrence. The sheriff’s office has revealed that the gun didn’t belong to a mother, but rather another family member, and investigations are currently underway to determine just how the boy gained access to a loaded firearm.

The tragedy-stricken family’s next door neighbor, Kathy Armentrout, had this to say. “They’re a very good family and this was a tragedy. I just hope everybody prays for them.”
