Last week, The Source Magazine had the opportunity to sit-down with the Iconic Lionel Richie, hours before his big HSN Live Concert event. He was promoting his new country-flavored album Tuskegee on the network and he ended up selling 20,000 units in one hour. Lionel Richie is set to appear on the new singing reality show ‘Duets,’ which also features Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke and Jennifer Nettles. This is what Lionel had to say about his new show: “That’s kind of what inspired this, ’cause I’m not a fan of I call it–torture of the contestants, so I would never want to be the guy that goes, ‘that sucks, that’s terrible.’ Not what you want! I’m in more of a nurturing position, I want to sit there with you and be there and we’re going to sing this together and guess what? You dont have to be the biggest voice, what a duet is all about is a complement, and by the way, if you got the note that should be here, I’ll give it to you. If I have the magic note, I’ll hit it…what we’ve gotten used to is all of them–every last one of the shows…how loud can you sing and guess what we have? Singers, not stylists, singers. So at the end, if I said to you let’s put an album together of all the great winners of all the great [competitions]…who do you know? What voice do you remember?…Maybe a Kelly Clarkson…So if you go back, what we’re trying to do with ‘Duets’ is I’m not interested in singing, singing is secondary, where is the stylist because that’s the career.”
