Diary of a Music Junkie
When anyone thinks of a normal day at the office, I’m sure you imagine an office space filled with a maze of cubicles. One of those very plain flushed in off-white lack of color workspaces. The boring day in and day out kind of space that we almost dread to open the wooden or glass doors to. When I walked into the office this week, there were bright lights and cameras and some of Hip-Hops biggest names walking through the door like they were returning home from a long journey.

I started my morning staring at the computer trying to get a handle on a few posts I had to put online along with the articles I had to get into shape for the book. Before I knew it DMC walked into the room. To shake hands with a founding member of Run-DMC is a special moment for any Hip-Hop head. There is an iconic history there that everyone can appreciate. As the singers and rappers started to pour in I was called over to Daddy’s House to find my EIC Kim Osorio sitting with K. Michelle. She asked me to come over and introduced me and as I sat down on the couch, she informs me that I am about to interview the Love and Hip Hop Atlanta star. I know she only gives me these on the spot interviews because she knows I can handle it and as I sat there with K. Michelle, we sat and had more of a conversation than an interview and shared our own stories like we had been friends that hadn’t seen each other in a while.

As soon as we had finished, it was time for her to go back into the office to do her on camera interview with Kim and I tried to sneak out of the office to get food for the one break I had. I ran back to the office and got in the elevator to stand next to Parrish aka PMD from EPMD. I smiled and walked over to the office with him where him and DMC were beyond excited to see each other. They sat on our couch and talked about their tour days together back in the days and it was a rare moment in Hip-Hop to see. I felt so lucky to be standing there listening to these rare stories of the history of a genre I have followed for so long.

Throughout the day, the names didn’t stop pouring through the door. Joe Budden came by to show love along with Joell Ortiz, half of the Slaughterhouse super group. Waka Flocka came by and so did French Montana, Wyclef Jean, and Raekwon. Hip-Hop was alive in the office and with all the cameras and video our Hip-Hop 101 was shaping up to be on point as the day wrapped up.

This world is everything far from normal, and I am beyond grateful to be apart of it. Another day at the office is hardly a regular day around here. Now to get back to these articles, the closing time clock is ticking and the long days and longer nights in the editorial room are about to commence.
