The long awaited, high budgeted, outer space centered film is a rare but not entirely new breed as far as contenders go. A serious contender to win because of it’s cinematic merits. that also happens to be a blockbuster; something that the Oscars traditionally love to get behind and make a spectacle of but don’t usually end up choosing as the actual winner.  This is especially evedent when faced with a direct, less showy contender (Avatar losing to The Hurt Locker in 2009 for example).
