Review: Bevel

A few week ago I was asked to try a new shaving product. Initially, I declined. I actually didn’t even want to know about the product since all of my past shaving experiences left me looking sort of disfigured, but then they explained to me that the product was developed specifically for people like me with course hair. Being the optimist that I am, I accepted.

A few weeks later I received a package in the mail. It was my Bevel starter kit, which consisted of six pieces. The first thing I noticed was the shaver, which I could tell was very high quality. Second was the priming oil. I have a thing for great scents and this oil smelled really pleasant  – very masculine with a light spiciness. Next we tested out the brush, which was dope. I didn’t really bother with the after shave, razors, and restoring balm until after my first shave.

Approximately four days after the kit arrived I decided to use it. By this time I was contacted by a member of the Bevel staff and the owner Tristan Walker and given instruction on how the Bevel system works. I really appreciated the extra information. So I took a shower before shaving as instructed, put the safety razor inside the shaver, applied the priming oil, ran the brush under water for 20 seconds, applied some shaving cream to the brush, scrubbed my face with the brush and began shaving. After my shave I rinsed my face and applied the restoring balm. I have to say that was definitely the closest shave I have ever had, no bullsh*t. This might sound weird, but I actually felt more manly because I shaved. It’s something I always see men doing in movies, but never do. My victory was short lived when I felt that warm sensation under my chin the same feeling I always get right before I get razor bumps. I got razor bumps. Much less then I normally get, but I got them.

I decided to back track and see where I went wrong. I put the blame on myself. After carefully reading the instructions, I realized that I shaved against the grain. That is the reason why I broke out. I figured I’d take my chances and try it the next night. The second time I shaved I had less irritation. I figured the little bit of irritation I had was cause by lack of shaving experience. By the third time I shaved my razor bumps had gone a down significantly and I had no irritation.

This product works and I kind of wonder why no one had ever cared enough to address this problem in the past. I had actually thought that I would never be able to shave and it was a reality that I accepted. Part of me can’t believe that I really can put a blade on my face and not break out, but I can and I do thanks to Bevel. In fact I haven’t been to the barber in 3 weeks and if I was bald I probably would never go to a barber again.
