Sophie Okonedo plays Ruth Younger.
What has it been like working with this cast?
Brilliant, I had a really wonderful experience. I have enjoyed myself so much. It is really a total privilege and honor to be here.
Speak about collaborating with Director Kenny Leon.
I didn’t know Kenny until I came here, but he has just been a super director. He gently guides you and let’s try out loads of things and is not restrictive, which is very helpful. All he wants is the truth. That’s all he cares about is telling the truth, which is really nice.
Speak about being in scenes with Denzel Washington.
The same as working with all the other actors. Because we treat everyone the same. That’s theater for you. It’s different. Denzel is an amazing actor but I’m also working with LaTanya, who is an amazing actor and I am also working with Anika, so between the four of us we’re all equal.
How did you bond to create that family environment?
The play does it for us. Luckily we all get along really well and we’re all quite strong characters, so we’re quite robust with each other. Denzel doesn’t go around like he’s a star so it makes it really easy.
