Over the past two years you may have heard the hype building around a collection of teenaged Brooklyn based rappers, called Pro Era, especially their most well known member, Joey Bada$$. However, the crew consists of a number of dope emcees including: Cj Fly, Nick Caution, Kirk Knight, Dirty Sanchesz, Dyemond Lewis Dessy Hinds, and Capital Steez ( RIP). Describe your music in three words and why?
Overwhelming
Soulful
$wank
I say overwhelming because im not what people expect to hear from a Brooklyn rapper. People usually go crazy when they hear me flow.
Soulful because I really spend a lot of time trying to get the right beat. The beat makes the record, when I hear what the beat sounds like it makes it easier for me to feel, the beat allows me to choose everything else that goes along with it so I can be precise.
$wank also because it’s a ordinary thing for a “PROdy”.
How long have you been rapping?
3 Years
Your name resembles de la soul; did you get your name from him? If not, where did it originate?
My name has three meanings, but my favorite album growing up as a kid was 3ft High and Rising so its funny you ask. Sole comes from sneaker because I’ve always been a sneaker fan and in spanish my name means to exceed the limit.
Where do you get most of your inspiration? As far as music, and style in clothing?
Music: Outkast, Jay Z, Big L (R.I.P), Captital Steez ( R.I.P ), My man Method Man
Clothing: Funny Sh*t, before rapping I was on my fashion sh*t, I was always the kid with 500 dollar sneakers and Comme De Garcon before i even joined Pro Era. I grew up going to prep school so I guess that impacted my style too. I like vintage clothing things though, like things people don’t wear anymore.
Is pro era still pro era or you guys are doing your own individual thing?
We’ve always done our own thing individually, we’re still a collective, we are dropping out dolo sh*t. Kirk Knight is up next. Were all doing one thing but just bringing it back to a foundation.
A lot of the upcoming rappers are in groups or their trying to bring someone else up with them, what advice would you give to them?
I actually commend it, nobody has ever done it by themselves. You need a solid ground behind you. Tupac had Outlaws, Biggie had Jr. Mafia, and Jay Z had Rockefella. You need a foundation. Its like a family outside of a family.
