Last night, the Chief Creative Officer of Marvel, Joe Quesada, stopped by Stephen Colbert‘s The Colbert Report show, and revealed some very pertinent information. The new Captain America, the longstanding iconic comic and feature film character, will be African-American for the first time in his 73 year history–Captain America first made his appearance on a March 1941-cover of Captain America Comics. This news comes on the heels of Marvel’s announcement that the new Thor–a character that debuted in 1962–will be a woman.

Anthony Mackie–who played Falcon, Captain America’s fellow super-hero who will be taking over as Captain America this fall–will likely be Captain America when the next feature film hits theaters.
