The San Antonio Spurs just won the NBA Championship, so you’d think they’d have a pretty quiet off-season filled with house keeping.  Instead, they made a move bigger than even LeBron returning home to Cleveland.

The Spurs hired Becky Hammon–the decorated WNBA player–as an assistant coach, making her the first female to hold a full-time NBA coaching position in league history.  The 6-time WNBA All-Star will parole the sidelines with legendary NBA coach Greg Popovich as The Spurs head out on another quest to capture the NBA’s highest prize.  It won’t be the first time Hammon will be a part of an NBA team in San Antonio, however.  For 5 seasons, from 2007-2011, Hammon was a star player on the WNBA team the San Antonio Silver Stars, and enjoyed a career year in 2009, when she averaged 19.5 points, 5 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game.  She will continue her legacy as the Spurs’ assistant coach, and she had this to say about her historic step up.

I’m up for challenges. I’m up for being outside the box, making tough decisions and challenges. … And I’m a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. Throw those all in there and this was the perfect challenge and opportunity.
