This afternoon, the New York Yankees will honor Derek Jeter. The shortstop who will retire at season’s end plans to give a speech to a sold-out crowd at Yankee Stadium when they take on the Kansas City Royals.
Additionally, starting today, the Bronx Bombers will wear a commemorative patch on both the left sleeve of their uniforms and on their caps to honor his final season. The honoring of a player with special New Era on field caps is a first for MLB. While the Yankees had worn Mariano Rivera caps for one game last year, this will be the first that an active player has been honored with an on-field cap for multiple games.
Jeter’s career includes 5 World Series rings, 13 All-Star Game selections and the distinction of being the only one of the Yankees’ many greats to break the 3,000-hit barrier as a member of the team. Jeter is excited about being acknowledged for his long career dating back to 1995. “I think the opportunity to be acknowledged is something I’d never expected,” Jeter told The Source.

Although Jeter will be honored today, the Yankees have 23 games remaining and are still in the playoff hunt. The Yankees entered yesterday’s game against the Kansas City Royals 4 ½ games behind the Seattle Mariners for the second American League Division Wild Card spot.
